Travel to Glasgow

The symposium is being held at Glasgow Caledonian University, which is conveniently situated in the heart of Glasgow, close to all major transport links. This means that no matter where you are coming from, travelling to the venue is very simple, whether it is by plane, train, bus or car. All the accommodation listed on the symposium website is within walking distance of the symposium.

Air

Glasgow International Airport

Ideally situated just 8 miles (13 km) to the west of the city centre, Glasgow International Airport has direct flights to New York (Continental), Chicago (American Airlines), Philadelphia (US Airways), Toronto (Air Canada, Zoom), Vancouver (Zoom) and Dubai (Emirates) and many European cities, including the key hubs of London, Birmingham, Manchester, Dublin, Amsterdam, Brussels and Copenhagen. Several low cost carriers operate from Glasgow, including EasyJet and Bmibaby.

The airport is connected to the city centre by the M8 motorway. There is a regular direct express bus (number 905), operating from the front of the terminal building to Buchanan Street Bus Station in the city centre. The approximate journey time is 25 minutes. A single ticket costs £3.30 and a return costs £5.00.

Alternatively, airport taxis (cabs) are available 24 hours a day. Taxi drivers are obliged to meter the entire journey and publish their scale of charges. The taxi fare from Glasgow Airport to Glasgow city centre is approximately £16.50. The taxi rank is located at the front of the terminal building, a short walk from UK arrivals. The journey time is 20 minutes (non rush hour).

Prestwick International Airport

Situated thirty miles (48 km) south of Glasgow, Prestwick International Airport offers further low cost flight options, principally with Ryanair. The airport is conveniently connected to Central Station in Glasgow by a direct 45 minute rail connection during the day. There is also an early morning and late evening bus connection to Buchanan Street Bus Station for which pre booking is recommended.

Edinburgh International Airport

Located 40 miles (64 km) east of Glasgow city centre, Edinburgh International Airport has direct flights to New York (Continental), Toronto (Air Transat), and many European cities, including the key hubs of London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Paris.

To reach Glasgow first take a bus or taxi to Edinburgh Waverley Station or Edinburgh Haymarket Station. The bus stops are located at stand 18 on the terminal forecourt road outside the UK arrivals hall. There is an express bus service to Edinburgh city centre (number 100) which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ticket cost is £3.40 single, £5.00 return. Tickets can be bought from an onward travel desk in the UK arrivals hall, the airport information desk in the International arrivals hall, or on the bus itself.

Taxis are also available from a designated rank beside the coach (bus) park outside the UK arrivals hall. A typical journey time to the city centre takes around 25 minutes. Trains to Glasgow Queen Street Station run every 15 minutes at peak times during the day and the journey time is 50 minutes.

Rail

Glasgow has two rail termini, both of which are within walking distance of the symposium venue.

Central Station is one mile (1.7 km) away and is the terminus for the West Coast mainline to London. Queen Street Station is just 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away and has direct connections to Edinburgh (50 minutes) and the East Coast mainline to London. For further information visit www.thetrainline.com.

Buchanan Street Bus Station is located directly opposite Glasgow Caledonian University and offers direct connections to Glasgow International Airport (Bus No. 905) and major UK cities and towns, as well as destinations throughout Glasgow. (Note: long distance luxury buses are often called coaches in the UK.)

No parking is available on the campus, although there is ample space available at the nearby Concert Hall and Buchanan Galleries car parks. There is one ferry connection from Scotland to mainland Europe, between Rosyth and Zeebrugge.
