ISCEV 98' MEMORIES

ISCEV President Message
Organisator's Recollections

Welcome to ISCEV 98!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

we are happy to meet all of you at the 36th ISCEV Symposium. It is a great pleasure for us that ISCEV has come, for the first time, to our country, and we are pleased that you have accepted our invitation to the Symposium at the Charles University - Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Královè.

Hradec Královè 2

We have tried to prepare this Symposium, in keeping with the traditions of ISCEV meetings, as a balanced combination of scientific sessions, electrophysiological equipment exhibition and a social program. This is described in detail on the following pages. The enclosures to this Program Book (included in your participant package) can help you during your stay in Hradec Králové and in Prague and provide some interesting information about places which you will visit.

Since many of you are visiting the Czech Republic for the first time, we will try to introduce you some of the positive characteristics of our country and we hope that you will find this as a pleasant feature of this Symposium. In many activities of the Symposium we use the enthusiastic help of our relatives and colleagues instead of the services of anonymous professional agencies not only to keep costs - and registration fees - down, but also to provide the cordial family atmosphere which is so typical of ISCEV meetings. Please be tolerant if you do not find these efforts fully successful and accept them in the spirit in which they are offered.

On behalf of all organizers, we wish you a satisfying scientific contribution to the 36th ISCEV Symposium and a pleasant experience in Bohemia.

Cordially yours

MirekZuzana

    Eberhard Dodt Memorial Award

This award was established in memory of the life and work of Eberhard Dodt to encourage young scientists in the field of clinical electrophysiology. It will be given to the scientist aged 34 years or younger (on January 1, 1998) who makes the best presentation at the ISCEV Symposium, in the judgement of the Adjudication Panel. The Dodt award carries a $400 honorarium, and $600 traveling fellowship for use at either of next two ISCEV Symposia. Candidates must indicate their eligibility on the abstract form in order to to be considered for the award. The candidate must be the presenting (first) author. Submissions may be either paper or poster, and both will be considered equally by a jury of evaluators and an adjudication panel composed of ISCEV board members. The primary criterion is scientific excellence, although innovation, clinical applicability and quality of presentation will be taken into account.
All applicants are strongly requested to stay at the Symposium till the very end when the winner will be announced and the award presented.

    ISCEV Grant Programme

The purpose of the ISCEV Grant programme is to assist young colleagues who would otherwise be unable to attend ISCEV meetings. The society is particularly interested in encouraging junior investigators and clinicians to enter the field of clinical electrophysiology and join ISCEV, and to foster communications with colleagues who may be affected by economic constraints beyond their control. The grant programme does not expect to provide full support to recipients but instead hopes to provide sufficient assistance, so that recipients will be able to find local funds for the remainder of the meeting costs.

    ISCEV GRANT AWARDEES

ISCEV awarded the following travel grants for 1998:
    Overseas:
    Olga DEMBINSKA, Canada

    Europe:
    Joanne GREATREX, UK

    ACCOMMODATION

  • (Locations are indicated on the enclosed map of Hradec Králové.)
  • Hradec KrlovÈ 5

In Hradec Králové we have taken a block booking of hotel rooms, at special rates, from June 11 (because of pre-ISCEV Course) through to June 17. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATION with the hotel of your choice by, at latest, 28 February 1998. After that the rooms are lost. Please print request form (or you can use e-mail possibiliy where it is available) and send the accommodation request directly to the chosen hotel, except for the Botel Cechie, in which instance, send it to the symposium secretariat. When all our allocation of rooms in a hotel is taken we will post a "No vacancy" sign on the web site by the name of the hotel in question. Please check this before making your booking.

Although the prices look low, be assured that all the accommodations are of good international standard. Low prices (compared with Prague) is one of advantages of having the symposium in our town. Hotels do not ask for a deposit payment in advance (with exception of the hotel Central in Prague); please do not misuse this advantage!! All prices are approximate and are per room (not person!). They include breakfast(s) with the exception of the Botel Cechie.

Hotel Cernigov - we recommend as first choice
This is situated in Riegrovo square (1499), which is in the center of the town, conveniently close to the railway station and with the best public transportation services to the symposium venues.

    TRANSPORTATION TO HRADEC KRLOVÉ

The closest international airport is Prague international airport (about 15 km from the center of Prague). There will be several "ISCEV buses" to meet and transport Symposium and Course participants. These will take you directly from the airport to your hotel in Hradec Králové. Departures of ISCEV buses (from the parking place in front of the airport arrival hall):
    June 11 (Thursday) - 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m.
    June 12 (Friday) - 4.00 p.m.
    June 13 (Saturday) - 11.00 a.m., 12.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m.

If you are not able to use our bus service from the airport (because you are arriving at a different time, for example), then the best way to reach Hradec Králové is to order, through us (Fax or E-mail to Lucie Machov), a private hire car (not taxi) with a driver who will wait at your specified arrival time with a notice bearing your name. This will cost a maximum of 2,200.-CZK (about USD 69). This is less than you can pay to go by Prague taxi from the airport to the Prague bus station!!

You can rent a car at the Prague airport but it is expensive, about double what you would pay in the USA. Also, please bear in mind that your journey back from Hradec Králové to Prague is provided in the symposium.

You can also take a train from the Prague main railway station (HLAVNI NADRAZI) or a bus from the Prague bus station FLORENC. If you do not want to undergo an adventure with Prague taxi drivers (we believe that their charging of foreign visitors is already known throughout the world), there is the following municipal transport from the airport to the railway station and bus station in Prague. You can take bus No 119 (its stop is in front of the airport and you either need to buy a ticket already in the airport hall or to have Czech coins to buy a ticket for 12,-CZK in a automatic machine at the bus stop) that takes you to the station of underground (METRO) line A called "Dejvicka" (last stop of the bus No. 119). Take this line up to the crossing with line C (the crossing is called "Muzeum") and change to line C in direction "Florenc". The first stop in this direction is "HLAVNI NADRAZI" (Main railway station) and the second one is bus station FLORENC. When you get off on the station FLORENC, take the first turn right (designated "AutobusovÈ ndraz - odjezdy autobusu") and you will come directly to the bus-station platforms. At this bus station you have to go to the platform No.14 from which maximum buses are going to Hradec Králové (in working days in about 30 minutes intervals up to about 7.15 p.m.)
    Departures of direct trains from "HLAVNI NADRAZI": 7.18 a.m., 12.19, 3.19 p.m., 4.23 p.m., 6.42 p.m. and 8.49 p.m.

It takes about 1.50 hour both by a train or bus to Hradec Králové. The railway and bus station in Hradec Králové is right in the center of the town, opposite to the Hotel Cernigov.

If you come by car to Hradec Králové, it will be possible to park at the hotels and the Faculty building.

    Back to menu,

    GENERAL INFORMATION

    Entry formalities
No visas are required for visitors from most countries, but please check with the Czech embassy in your country in case of doubt.

Telephone, Fax, E-mail facilities and Messages
Nearby the registration desk a "Communication center" for Symposium participants is available (Telephone, Fax, E-mail). Urgent messages for participants should be sent to the Fax No.: +420-49-5513912 (5513597) or to the E-mail address: iscev98@lfhk.cuni.cz.

    Currency exchange
In working hours exchange of any convertible currency is possible in all banks in the center of the town, 24 hours exchange service is provided in hotels »ernigov and Alessandria and automatic banker machines are available at nearby banks for major card systems. Credit cards are accepted at larger stores and restaurants.

    Climate
The weather in June is usually pleasantly warm, but there can be cloudy and rainy periods (the temperature can vary in a wide range from about 15 to 30(infinity) C), so please be prepared for almost any kind of weather (except snow)! Accompanying persons may find a swim-suit useful.

    Dress
In two occasions a formal dress is expected - for the Gala Dinner and the Closing Ceremony in Prague Carolinum.

    City Transportation
ISCEV 98 badges will serve as free tickets for municipal transportation during the Symposium. You can orient yourself in the lines of buses and trolleys using the enclosed City map. To reach the Faculty of Medicine (ISCEV Course, Oral sessions, Exhibition), you can take buses or trolleys No. 3,5,6,7,12 from the hotel »ernigov (4th Bus stop - "Okresn ad") and No. 5,6,12 from the hotel Alessandria (3rd Bus stop - "Okresn ad").
At the end of each social program event, there will be ISCEV bus available (mainly for older participants) which will take you to your hotels. If there is demand, this bus will circulate several times (at about 20 min. intervals) to serve everybody.

Transportation to Closing Ceremony in Prague Carolinum
ISCEV Buses will collect you from hotels in Hradec Králové on Wednesday, June 17 at 2.00 p.m. and will transport you to your hotels in Prague. From all hotels in Prague, Carolinum is within walking distance (see Map of Prague). During your stay in Prague, you can use the Prague Guide (including a map of downtown) which is enclosed with your Symposium package.

    Lunches
Lunch will be served every day in the Adalbertinum building, below the old town - see the city map. (Please, do not confuse it with "Nove Adalbertinum" in the Old town square, where the Poster Session will be held). The time for lunch is 12.30 - 2.00 p.m. on Sunday and Tuesday, 12.30 - 1.30 p.m. on Monday and 12.00 - 1.00 p.m. on Wednesday. During the two trips, accompanying persons will have lunch on a way.
Vegetarians are requested to register at the registration desk as soon as possible (they will get a special card) so that the necessary number of vegetarian meals could be prepared.
For lunches, as well as for all Symposium social program, the badges will enable you to participate. Therefore, please, keep them visible for the whole time.

    Coffee breaks
45 minute-long coffee breaks are planned to provide enough time not only for refreshment but also to visit the exhibits of electrophysiological equipment. Coffee, tea, mineral water, juice, cakes and fruit will be provided in front of the lecture hall as well as in the exhibition area on the second floor. We ask you not to make lines in front of the lecture hall but kindly to use also the cafeteria on the second floor, which also has space to sit down.

    Back to menu,

    CALL FOR VEGETARIANS

    Dear vegetarian colleagues,
for your convenience, we would like to ask you to register at the registration desk as soon as possible so that a needed number of vegetarian meals could be prepared for you. You will get a special "vegetarian identity card" (otherwise your envious colleagues could take your meals when they will see it).
